Some of you know that last year I was in need of a new desktop; I decided that since I will be needing a lot of power and stability I would look to the enterprise workstation market. I settled upon a Sun Microsystems Ultra 20 Workstation, it was relatively new to the market and had outstanding reviews online. So I went for it.

I received TheSun (as it is known on many of my I.M. conversations) and set it up to my liking, I used it for 9 months without even a hiccup, until this morning, when I woke up to find that the system was un-responsive. I figured this was a one time thing and gave it a hard reboot. The machine turned of and back on and did it’s normal diagnostics (spining everything up REALLY fast and then slowing it back down). I found that once it was time to boot from the hard drive, it wouldn’t boot. At this point I was terrified, there’s a lot of data on that hard drive and I need it. So I took it to work.

When I arrived at work my boss and I tried doing a Windows XP repair installation, no such luck, it just froze about 3/4 the way through, we then rescued all of my data off of the drive.

Later that day, I called Sun Microsystems to open a support ticket. I had experience with other computer companies and was not too excited about having to send my hard drive away so they could send me a new one. However, this was not the case with Sun. I told them what was happening to my computer and they agreed it was the hard drive; 6 hours later, my local Sun Microsystems tech delivered me a brand new hard drive. I was amazed.

Sun Microsystems. You are amazing.
